Childbirth Classes: Are They Worth It?

Your birth provider, whether you are birthing at a hospital, a birth center, or even at home, will usually provide childbirth classes for expecting mothers/couples. Some are provided free of charge, but several more intensive classes can cost between $50-$100. These classes, when given at a hospital, also include a tour of the maternity ward. You will learn where to enter when in labors, including if it is outside regular hours, see a triage room, a labor and delivery room, and a recovery/postpartum room. You will likely not view the operating theater which is used for c-sections.
You may wonder if it is worth it to take the time, and money, to attend one of these classes either by yourself or with your partner. In my opinion, even if you plan to hire a doula for your birth, these classes are invaluable. Any additional education you can get regarding your labor and delivery is worth the money! While some classes given at hospitals teach you more about being "a good patient" than giving you all of your childbirth options, you will get good information on coping techniques, how to recognize the start of labor, when to call your provider, etc.
Even if you have had a child before, classes can help alleviate any fears you have or answer any questions you may have regarding a different outcome than previous births such as "will I be allowed to have a VBAC at this hospital?" or "does this hospital allow water births?" After taking a class, you can call your doula to discuss what you learned and get any further questions answered by her, one-on-one.
